Portrait of Fernando Simón Bolívar by Artist Luis Alvarez de Lugo
The artist Luis Alvarez de Lugo donated a portrait of the Liberator’s nephew, Fernando Bolívar Tinoco—son of the Father of the Nation’s eldest brother, Fernando Bolívar, and Josefa María Tinoco—to the Cuadra Bolívar.
Fernando Simón Bolívar was held in great affection by his uncle, who always distinguished him in a very special way. This brings to mind the famous and valuable letter the Liberator addressed to the young man’s teachers, giving them instructions on how his education should be carried out to ensure a refined upbringing. The Liberator fully funded the costs of Fernando Simón’s education in the United States. Fernando Simón Bolívar Tinoco accompanied his uncle on several occasions, including the day of the failed assassination attempt at the San Carlos Palace in Bogotá in 1828. He was also among those present to assist the Liberator at the time of his death in Santa Marta.
Luis Alvarez de Lugo has taken great care in the execution of this portrait as a subject of interest. He has produced several works of the Father of the Country, having participated in the debated competition promoted some time ago by the Bolivarian Society. The painting he submitted on that occasion is now located in the Presidential Residence of La Casona. Another of Alvarez de Lugo’s most interesting oil paintings, featuring the image of the Liberator, adorns the hall of the Academy of Medicine.
The portrait now donated to the Nation to decorate the Main Hall of the Cuadra Bolívar—a property transferred by the Father of the Nation to his nephew in 1825—joins those of Juana and María Antonia Bolívar, as well as the “Young Bolívar” executed by Calvo Carrión of the Fine Arts Gallery.
Alvarez de Lugo explained that the work is a development and enlargement of a miniature found in the Liberator’s Birthplace (Casa Natal) at the San Jacinto Corner, signed by Lachaisnée and likely made in Philadelphia.
The dimensions of the work are $33 \times 40$, painted in oil and mounted in a period frame. Alvarez de Lugo is known to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Venezuelan Association of Friends of Colonial Art; the initiative to commission this work came from Mauro Páez Pumar and Marcos Paris del Gallego.
The artist highlighted as a fact of unique importance that this portrait will represent both Fernando Simón and his father at the Cuadra Bolívar, as no portrait of the latter exists.
Without a doubt, the work in question is one of the best by the painter Alvarez de Lugo. Thanks to private initiative, the Cuadra Bolívar—now fully restored—will be one of the most beautiful examples of Colonial Caracas. Many valuable donations have been contributed to enhance its atmosphere by individuals who love tradition and art, such as the present case of Luis Alvarez de Lugo, author of this valuable portrait of Fernando Simón Bolívar Tinoco, nephew of the Liberator.

Retrato de Fernando Simón Bolívar Por el Artista Luis Alvarez de Lugo
El artista Luis Alvarez de Lugo, donó a la Cuadra Bolívar, un retrato del sobrino del Libertador, Fernando Bolívar Tinoco, hijo del hermano mayor del Padre de la Patria, Fernando Bolívar y de Josefa María Tinoco.
Fernando Simón Bolívar gozó de gran cariño, por parte de su tío, quien supo en todo momento distinguirlo en forma muy especial. Se recuerda así, la célebre y valiosa carta que dirigiera a sus maestros, dictándoles instrucciones en torno a la forma cómo debía ser realizada aquella, con miras al logro de una más esmerada formación en la persona de su sobrino. El Libertador, costeó integralmente los gastos de educación de Fernando Simón en los Estados Unidos. Fernando Simón Bolívar Tinoco, acompañó a su tío en varias ocasiones, contándose entre estas el día del frustrado atentado del Palacio de San Carlos en Bogotá el año 28. Estuvo también entre las personas que a la hora de la muerte del Libertador en Santa Marta, lo asistieron.
Luis Alvarez de Lugo, se ha esmerado en la realización del retrato, como tema de interés. Del Padre de la Patria ha ejecutado unos cuantos, habiendo concursado en el discutido concurso promovido hace algún tiempo por la Sociedad Bolivariana. El cuadro que en aquella ocasión enviara, se encuentra hoy día en la Residencia Presidencial de La Casona. Otro de los más interesantes óleos de Alvarez de Lugo, con la efigie del Libertador adorna la sala de la Academia de Medicina.
El retrato que ahora dona a la Nación para adornar el Salón Principal de la Cuadra Bolívar, propiedad que traspasara el Padre de la Patria a su sobrino el año 25, acompaña a las de Juana y María Antonia Bolívar, además del Bolívar Joven, ejecutado por Calvo Carrión de la Galería Bellas Artes.
Explicó Alvarez de Lugo, que se trata del desarrollo y ampliación de una miniatura que se halla en la Casa Natal del Libertador, en la Esquina de San Jacinto, firmada por Lachaisnée, hecha probablemente en Filadelfia.
Las dimensiones de la obra son $33 \times 40$, trabajado en óleo, montada en marco de la época. Alvarez de Lugo como se sabe es miembro de la Junta Directiva de la Asociación Venezolana Amigos del Arte Colonial, siendo la iniciativa de encomendar este trabajo al artista, de parte de Mauro Páez Pumar y de Marcos Paris del Gallego.
El artista destacó como hecho de singular importancia, que este retrato representará en la Cuadra Bolívar, tanto a Fernando Simón como a su padre, por cuanto del último no existe ningún retrato.
Sin duda alguna, ésta de la cual nos ocupamos se trata de una de las mejores obras del pintor Alvarez de Lugo. Gracias a la iniciativa privada, la Cuadra Bolívar, hoy totalmente restaurada, será uno de los más bellos exponentes de la Caracas Colonial; han sido muchos los donativos valiosos aportados para realzar su ambiente por personas amantes de la tradición y del arte, como el caso presente de Luis Alvarez de Lugo, autor de este valioso retrato de Fernando Simón Bolívar Tinoco, sobrino del Libertador.
