CARACAS, November 1963. — An apparently unjustified price hike occurred yesterday in some markets. Potatoes, for example, were sold at Bs. 1.50; green beans at Bs. 2.50, and bell peppers at Bs. 2.25. It was also noted that tomatoes, which at other times had sold for one bolivar, were yesterday at 1.50 per kilogram without being any better; eggs were offered at 3.25 and 3.40 bolivars per dozen. Some people paid the small surcharge regardless, because two days ago the same item showed a notable shortage. By the way, Félix Adam could not find the kiosk that had been offered to him at the Industrial Fair to place the egg production from the Canoabo school farm and other canned goods made by the students, which are offered almost at cost to consumers; however, the teacher pointed out that these products can be purchased at stall 102 of the Quinta Crespo Market. No one knows for certain how speculation and the increase in costs are produced. What is certain is that, in the end, the limited pockets of housewives suffer from these surprising and periodic hikes that so markedly affect the popular diet. Nevertheless, quite often the astonishing case occurs where, while the unhappy women run from one stall to another in search of lower prices, the wasteful husband cheerfully spends his cents on drinks and fireworks.
The police report yesterday brought a dramatic account according to which a nine-month-old child abandoned in a shack was transported to the Salas Post; upon being examined by doctors, they observed advanced malnutrition, a “superficial myiasis,” and—the bulletin most strangely notes—”his entrails covered in worms.” The child was transferred to the Hospital by Municipal Police Corporal 5236 of patrol P-336, at the request of neighbors in the sector who heard him crying. The parents of the child are unknown. It is reported that doctors at the Coche Post are currently providing all kinds of care in an effort to restore his health and hope that one of his progenitors presents themselves as soon as possible at said medical center.
At the “Galería Reverón,” which artist Adriano Serradimigni will inaugurate next Saturday at Avda. Avila in La Florida, paintings by Gori, Gragirena de Salima, Marcos Castillo, Sra. de Lasser, Ricardo Gobel, Silva Méndez, Tomás Golding, Dani Maris, and other artists will be exhibited. The poet Pedro Antonio Vásquez, a consistent friend of all that entails spirituality, provides the rigorous presentation in the catalog of the informal exhibition and says that Serradimigni has created an “inaugural prize,” which will consist only of a diploma; while modest in its scope—the poet points out with good reason—it carries instead a deep significance as an encouragement to artists. Furthermore—the journalist from “La Religión” adds with tact—money will not be the only thing of value, as the other endures as an example for future generations. Among the paintings that will surely make a pleasant impression on visitors due to their naturalness is “El Estudio” (The Studio), by the painter Luis Alvarez de Lugo, among the most qualified contemporary artists in this genre and whose work still has the charm of the completely unreleased, as due to his personal modesty he has not participated until now in the so-called “art salons” ordinarily flooded with “mamarrachos” (shoddy works).

CARACAS, noviembre de 1963. — Un alza aparentemente injustificada se había operado ayer en algunos mercados. Las papas por ejemplo se vendieron a Bs. 1,50; las vainitas a bolívares 2,50 y el pimentón a Bs. 2,25. Se dijo además que los tomates que otras veces se habían vendido a bolívar, estaban ayer a 1,50 el kilogramo sin ser mejores; los huevos se ofrecieron a bolívares 3,25 y bolívares 3,40 la docena. Algunas personas pagaron sin embargo el pequeño recargo, porque hace dos días el mismo renglón acusó una notable escasez. Por cierto que Félix Adam no pudo encontrar el kiosco que le habían ofrecido en la Feria Industrial para colocar allí la producción de huevos de la granja escolar Canoabo y otras conservas enlatadas por los alumnos las cuales se ofrecen casi al precio de costo a los consumidores, pero señaló el maestro que estos productos pueden ser adquiridos en el puesto 102 del Mercado de Quinta Crespo. Nadie sabe a ciencia cierta la manera cómo se produce la especulación y el encarecimiento. Lo cierto es que a la postre el bolsillo limitado de las amas de casa se resiente por estas alzas sorpresivas y periódicas que tan señaladamente afectan la dieta popular. Sinembargo no pocas veces se da el asombroso caso de que mientras las infelices mujeres corren de un puesto a otro en busca de precios más bajos, el marido derrochador invierte alegremente los centavos en bebidas y fuegos artificiales.
El parte de policía trae ayer dramática relación según la cual un niño de nueve meses abandonado en un rancho fue transportado al Puesto de Salas y al ser examinado por los médicos le apreciaron además de desnutrición avanzada, una “miasis superficial”, y lo más extraño —señala el boletín— “cubiertas sus entrañas de gusanos”. El niño fue trasladado al Hospital por el Cabo de Policía Municipal 5236 de la patrulla P-336, a requerimiento de los vecinos del sector que le escuchaban llorar. Se ignora quiénes son los padres de la criatura. Se informa que los médicos del Puesto de Coche le prestan actualmente toda suerte de cuidados en un esfuerzo por devolverle la salud y esperan que alguno de sus progenitores se presente lo más pronto posible a dicho centro asistencial.
En la “Galería Reverón” que inaugurará el sábado próximo el artista Adriano Serradimigni, Avda. Avila de La Florida se exhibirán cuadros de Gori, Gragirena de Salima, Marcos Castillo, Sra. de Lasser, Ricardo Gobel, Silva Méndez, Tomás Golding, Dani Maris y otros artistas. El poeta Pedro Antonio Vásquez, consecuente amigo de todo cuanto entrañe espiritualidad, hace la presentación de rigor en el catálogo de la informal exposición y dice que Serradimigni ha creado un “premio inauguración”, el cual consistirá sólo en un diploma, que si es modesto en sus alcances —señala con sobrada razón el poeta— entraña en cambio un hondo significado en cuanto a estímulo a los artistas. Porque por otra parte —agrega con tino el periodista de “La Religión”— el dinero no será lo único valedero, que lo otro perdura como ejemplo a las generaciones venideras”. Entre los cuadros que seguramente causarán agradable impresión a los visitantes por su naturalidad se encuentra “El Estudio”, del pintor Luis Alvarez de Lugo, entre los más calificados artistas contemporáneos en este género y cuya obra tiene aún el encanto de todo lo inédito, pues en razón a su personal modestia no ha participado hasta ahora en los llamados “salones de arte” ordinariamente inundados de mamarrachos.
