Ephemeral Honeymoon of Bolívar and María Teresa at their San Mateo Estate

CARACAS, DECEMBER 1978. —The marriage of Bolívar to María Teresa lasted a very short time. They married on May 26, 1802, in the parish of San Sebastian and embarked in A Coruña bound for America. The cabin aboard the ship had been ordered to be embellished with the last flowers of spring. Once in Caracas, the newlyweds were the subject of festivities by their relatives and friends, and a few days later they left for their estate in San Mateo, where the Bolívar sugar mill is located.
They would live together for barely a few months. María Teresa fell ill and died on January 22, 1803. Years later, in a letter to Perú de La Croix, Bolívar would express himself regarding the unfortunate event: “—Look at how things are, if I had not been widowed, my life would have been different. I would not be General Bolívar, nor the Liberator, although I agree that my genius was not meant to be Mayor of San Mateo. The death of my wife put me very early on the path of politics.”

Inspired by those placid honeymoon days of Bolívar in the historic house of San Mateo —now converted into a Museum—, the painter Alvarez de Lugo has made a sketch of an equestrian Bolívar riding along the paths of the Aragua estate, on a fine grey-coated colt. The work is so far part of the collection that the artist plans to exhibit soon, as he announced yesterday in his studio. It has dimensions of 1.20 by 0.70, oil on canvas. Alvarez de Lugo is the author of the “Civil Bolívar” found in the main hall of the National Academy of Medicine and of another painting that can be seen in the Office of the Chief of the Military Household in Miraflores.
