The evolution of painting, from the dead-end it found itself in at the beginning of the century to a style richer in possibilities, originated with the arrival of Picasso in Paris and subsequently with the arrival of other artists to the capital of France, such as Schneider, Szenes, Pignon, Poliakoff, and Gromaire.

In the large canvases of the Malaga-born painter, we have seen the birth of some ideas that have been acquiring greater importance throughout the present century.

The importance of light and color, the disregard for simple harmonization, and the preferences for more complicated compositions were clearly manifested in Paris and are evidence of this evolution. We can appreciate this in the exhibition “Paris and Contemporary Art,” which remains open at the Ateneo de Caracas, and which, since its inauguration last day the 13th, has been visited by a numerous public. The closing of this magnificent exhibition is announced for the upcoming day the 27th.

ALEJANDRO OTERO AT THE CONKRIGHT

For six months, Alejandro Otero worked in Luisa Palacios’ workshop on the silkscreens that were presented to the public yesterday at the Conkright Gallery. The prominent artist exhibits fifty works, created from a pattern, in which the nuances and reflections of silver and gold achieved offer effects of changing luminosity and singular beauty.

A numerous public, among whom were artists, intellectuals, writers, etc., filled the hall of the Conkright, praising the work of this notable artist, who for the first time presents his silkscreen works for the consideration of the public and critics.

Sonia Sanoja Sonia Sanoja, the distinguished Venezuelan dancer, commented on the work of Alejandro Otero, saying: “Seeing Alejandro Otero’s silkscreens is a truly enriching experience. Not only for the eyes, but for the spirit. Faced with them, I feel a desire to dance; I believe that only by dancing could I express the emotion that this work produces in me.”

Dr. Rafael Millán “What I admire most in this exhibition,” said Dr. Rafael Millán G., “is the pure expression of beauty and movement achieved through a process of purification that eliminates every element foreign to color and texture.”

Mercedes Guerra Sucre de Coronil Mercedes Guerra Sucre de Coronil, expressed as a member of the “public,” the following: “Within the ascending unity or evolution, within a tireless creative restlessness that reflects all of Alejandro Otero’s work, these silkscreens come to be, in my opinion, a harmonious synthesis between colorisms and structures. I am not a critic nor a dilettante of painting, just ‘public,’ but that is how I see and feel it.”

MAISON BERNARD GALLERY The original works of Salvador Dalí on display at Maison Bernard are insured for 350,000 bolívares. The information was provided by the director of said Gallery, who, referring to the interview he had with the surrealist painter for the realization of this exhibition, stated: “I invited Salvador Dalí to attend the opening of this exhibition and his reply was: ‘I cannot for now; my travels have been reduced to visiting my friends in Paris and opening my exhibitions in New York. I would like to visit Venezuela, where I have great friends and where my paintings and jewels have been exhibited on several occasions. Someday I may appear in Caracas.'” The exhibition comprises twelve original works of great value, in which, as the New York press has noted, “culminates the inventive genius and the rare artistic splendor of a painter who has enriched the heritage of modern art of our century with dazzling contributions.”

SANS SOUCI GALLERY Luis Alvarez de Lugo, the painter of felt emotions, a restless spirit and renovator of his artistic trend, inaugurated his painting exhibition yesterday at the Sans Souci Gallery. The success of this exhibition, and the interest in knowing the latest work by the painter, was evident as soon as the doors of the Gallery were opened. The spacious hall where the paintings of Luis Alvarez de Lugo are exhibited could not accommodate the large number of visitors who attended the Sans Souci yesterday. More than half of the forty-eight paintings in the show were acquired in the first moments. The painter did not rest to attend to all those who approached him to congratulate him and ask for autographs. The exhibition has been a true success. Luis Alvarez de Lugo was very satisfied.

La evolución de la pintura, desde el punto muerto en que se encontraba a principios de siglo, a un estilo más rico en posibilidades, se originó con la llegada de Picasso a París y posteriormente con la llegada de otros artistas a la capital de Francia, como Schneider, Szenes, Pignon, Poliakoff y Gromaire.

En los grandes cuadros del pintor malagueño, hemos visto el nacimiento de algunas ideas que han ido adquiriendo mayor importancia en lo que va del presente siglo.

La importancia de la luz y del color, el desdén de la armonización sencilla y las preferencias por las composiciones más complicadas, se pusieron de manifiesto precisamente en París y muestra de esta evolución. La podemos apreciar en la exposición “París y el arte contemporáneo”, que se mantiene abierta en el Ateneo de Caracas, y que desde su inauguración el pasado día 13, está siendo visitada por numeroso público. La clausura de esta magnífica exposición está anunciada para el próximo día 27.

ALEJANDRO OTERO EN LA CONKRIGHT

Durante seis meses estuvo trabajando Alejandro Otero en el taller de Luisa Palacios, en las serigrafías que ayer fueron presentadas al público en la Galería Conkright. El destacado artista exhibe cincuenta trabajos, realizados a partir de un patrón, en los cuales los matices y reflejos de plata y oro conseguidos, ofrecen efectos de luminosidad, cambiantes, de una singular belleza.

Numeroso público, entre el que se encontraban artistas, intelectuales, escritores, ple-naron la sala de la Conkright, elogiando la obra de este notable artista, que por primera vez presenta a la consideración del público y la crítica sus trabajos de serigrafías.

Sonia Sanoja Sonia Sanoja, la distinguida danzarina venezolana, comentó la obra de Alejandro Otero, diciendo: —Ver las serigrafías de Alejandro Otero es una experiencia realmente enriquecedora. No sólo para los ojos, sino para el espíritu. Ante ellas siento deseos de danzar; creo que sólo danzando podría expresar la emoción que esta obra produce en mí.

Dr. Rafael Millán —Lo que admiro más en esta exposición —dijo el doctor Rafael Millán G.— es la pura expresión de belleza y movimiento logrados a través de un proceso de depuración que elimina todo elemento extraño al color y la textura.

Mercedes Guerra Sucre de Coronil Mercedes Guerra Sucre de Coronil, opinó como “público”, lo siguiente: —Dentro de la unidad ascendente o evolución, dentro de una inquietud creadora infatigable que refleja toda la obra de Alejandro Otero, estas serigrafías vienen a ser, en mi opinión, una síntesis armoniosa entre los colorismos y las estructuras. No soy ni crítico ni diletante de la pintura, sólo “público”, pero así la veo y la siento.

GALERIA MAISON BERNARD Las obras originales de Salvador Dalí que se exhiben en la Maison Bernard, están aseguradas en 350 mil bolívares. La información fue facilitada por el director de dicha Galería, quien haciendo referencia a la entrevista que tuvo con el pintor surrealista para la realización de esta exposición, manifestó: —Invité a Salvador Dalí a que asistiese a la inauguración de esta exposición y su contestación fue: “No puedo por ahora; mis viajes se han reducido a visitar a mis amistades en París y a inaugurar mis exposiciones en Nueva York. Me gustaría conocer Venezuela, donde tengo grandes amigos y donde mis pinturas y mis joyas han sido expuestas en varias ocasiones. Algún día puede que aparezca por Caracas”. La exposición comprende doce obras originales de gran valor, en las cuales, como lo ha señalado la prensa de Nueva York, “culmina el genio inventivo y la rara fastuosidad artística de un pintor que ha enriquecido con deslumbrantes aportaciones el patrimonio del arte moderno de nuestro siglo”.

GALERIA SANS SOUCI Luis Alvarez de Lugo, el pintor de las emociones sentidas, espíritu inquieto y renovador de su tendencia artística, inauguró ayer su exposición de pintura en la Galería Sans Souci. El éxito de esta exposición, el interés en conocer lo último realizado por el pintor, se puso ayer de manifiesto tan pronto fueron abiertas las puertas de la Galería. La amplia sala donde se exhiben los cuadros de Luis Alvarez de Lugo no dio cabida al gran número de visitantes que ayer concurrió a la Sans Souci. Más de la mitad de los cuarenta y ocho cuadros de la muestra fueron adquiridos en los primeros momentos. El pintor no se dio descanso para atender a cuantos se acercaban a él para felicitarlo y pedirle autógrafos. La exposición ha constituido un verdadero suceso. Luis Alvarez de Lugo se encontraba muy satisfecho.
