Caracas Scenes by Alvarez de Lugo and a 90-Year-Old Painter

CARACAS, October 1972. — A variety of Caracas-themed motifs and, at the same time, scenes of the rural environment are exhibited these days by the painter Luis Alvarez de Lugo, who has been one of the city’s most consistent portraitists. For the first time, he will unveil—for example—a reproduction of the facade and sides of the Temple and Convent of the Monjas Concepciones, taken from an old photograph—the only one that exists—dated 1874. Although this work is not included in the catalog because the valuable graphic testimony was received late, he said he would reproduce it within a relatively short period.
In the collection of paintings by Alvarez de Lugo, the various shots of the Avila attract attention, achieved with a realism and an interpretation that demonstrates the paths of improvement the artist is traveling. His collection includes, among others, titles such as: “La Quebrada”, “Calle Colonial de La Guaira”, “Testigo Mudo”, “Quinta Anauco”, “Se Modernizó el Frutero”, “La Pulpería del Compadre”, “Mientras Tanto”, “Avenida de los Samanes”, and the Old Sabana Grande Hippodrome, with an image of the Silla de Caracas in the background—the stage for this recreational center’s first horse races held under the auspices of President Joaquín Crespo in 1894. The master Arturo Michelena left certain paintings there, including one of the mare “Calixta,” which was donated to the Museum of Fine Arts.

Around these days, Campeggi-Campeggi has also opened an exhibition—an artist who has perfected the technique of Renaissance authors with modern elements. His works crafted on glass, in which the colors gold and purple of the cloaks of virgins and madonnas predominate, have been a source of pleasant surprise for lovers of this style, which Campeggi-Campeggi now revives with unusual vigor in the fascinating exhibition he is presenting.

PAINTER AT 90 YEARS OLD
On the occasion of the Sesquicentennial of Petare, Mrs. Margarita de Olavarría, ninety years old and dedicated to painting for many years, will hold an exhibition of 25 of her paintings at the “Germán U. Lira” House of Culture, with this exhibition remaining open for two weeks. Doña Margarita has said that she wishes to pay this tribute to Petare from her memories and that she has gone to great lengths—as she stated to Lourdes Morales—to present a set of prints, which includes some seascapes.

On the other hand, on November 1st, the successful artist Corina Pietri opens her exhibition. It is satisfying to see the boom that the application for plastic arts has taken among us, as well as the quality of the works exhibited. Escenas de Caracas de Alvarez de Lugo y una Pintora de 90 Años
[Leyenda de la primera imagen]: Uno de los cuadros mejor realizados y fiel reflejo de una escena en nuestro medio rural, del artista Luis Alvarez de Lugo.
CARACAS, octubre de 1972. — Una variedad de motivos caraqueños y al mismo tiempo escenas del medio rural exhibe por estos días el pintor Luis Alvarez de Lugo, quien ha sido uno de los más consecuentes retratistas de la ciudad. Por primera vez dará a conocer —por ejemplo— una reproducción de la fachada y laterales del Templo y Convento de las Monjas Concepciones, tomada de una antigua fotografía —la única tal vez que exista— con fecha 1874. Aunque dicha obra no está incluida en el catálogo en razón de que recibió tarde el valioso testimonio gráfico, dijo que la reproduciría dentro de un plazo relativamente breve.
Llama la atención en el conjunto de cuadros de Alvarez de Lugo las diferentes tomas del Avila, logradas con un realismo y una interpretación que viene a demostrarnos los caminos de superación por los cuales transita el artista. Su colección comprende entre otros títulos los de: “La Quebrada”, “Calle Colonial de La Guaira”, “Testigo Mudo”, “Quinta Anauco”, “Se Modernizó el Frutero”, “La Pulpería del Compadre”, “Mientras Tanto”, “Avenida de los Samanes”, el Viejo Hipódromo de Sabana Grande, con una imagen de la Silla de Caracas al fondo, escenario que fue este centro recreativo de las primeras carreras de caballos efectuadas bajo los auspicios del Presidente Joaquín Crespo en 1894. El maestro Arturo Michelena dejó por cierto algunos cuadros, uno de la yegua “Calixta”, que fue donado al Museo de Bellas Artes.

Por estos días también ha abierto una exposición Campeggi-Campeggi, artista que ha perfeccionado con los elementos modernos, la técnica de los autores renacentistas. Sus obras trabajadas en vidrio y en las cuales predomina el color dorado y la púrpura de los mantos de vírgenes y madonas, ha constituido un motivo de agradable sorpresa para los amantes de este estilo, que ahora resucita Campeggi-Campeggi con inusitado vigor en la fascinante muestra que expone.

PINTORA A LOS 90 AÑOS
Con motivo del Sesquicentenario de Petare, la señora Margarita de Olavarría, de noventa años cumplidos y dedicada por muchos años a la pintura, hará una exposición de 25 de sus cuadros en la Casa de la Cultura “Germán U. Lira”, permaneciendo esta exposición abierta durante dos semanas. Doña Margarita ha dicho que desea rendir este homenaje al Petare de sus recuerdos y que se ha esmerado —así lo manifestó a Lourdes Morales— en presentar un conjunto de estampas, entre las cuales incluye algunas marinas.

Por otra parte, el 1º de noviembre abre su exposición la pintora Corina Pietri, una artista de éxito.
