Don Federico Schlessinger Offers Lunch Today to 500 Children
CARACAS, December 1966. — Regarding December 17, the date on which another anniversary of the death of the Liberator is commemorated, the celebrated artist Luis Alvarez de Lugo is exhibiting a “Civil Bolívar” in the “Sala Reverón” that has drawn much attention. Alvarez de Lugo, who is the author of another painting recently sent to the contest promoted by the Bolivarian Society, indicated that the civic aspect within the personality of the Father of the Fatherland is fascinating and, in passing, evoked his qualities as a legislator, tribune, and writer. It is part of an interesting retrospective exhibition presented on the occasion of the proximity of the quadricentennial date of Caracas, with images of the city from the 1900s.
Mr. Federico Schlessinger is offering a banquet today to five hundred children of limited resources. It is the tribute that Mr. Schlessinger pays annually on this date to the country as recognition for the hospitality he found upon his arrival from a Europe in flames in the year 1939. On this occasion, Mr. Schlessinger has also wished to provide a lunch next week to a large group of elderly people: “Also the elderly—principally those who live isolated from the affection of relatives—are deserving of a memory on this date that should be one of joy and coexistence for all.”
Schlessinger likewise recalled his beginnings in this country. Among other occupations, he had that of a delivery man for a Viennese bakery in a van, the photograph of which he keeps in his office as testimony of the difficult days. General Isaías Medina Angarita governed Venezuela, whom he saw enter “La Península” on more than one occasion at the corner of San Pablo, when he would come down from Miraflores with his Minister of War and Navy, Delfín Becerra.
“On a certain occasion, he saw me arrive with my trays and, after greeting me as was customary, he invited me to a ham ‘sandwich’ and a vermouth, which I accepted, and they seemed exquisite to me, not only for the opportunity but for the gesture of simplicity of the First Magistrate, for whom I was then nothing more than a simple worker.”
The only woman who is a member of a Stock Exchange in Venezuela, Dr. Dorothy Tymon, says that this activity of exchanging securities, although apparently harsh, is not at all strange to the feminine mentality: “a good household manager—for example—must be aware of market prices and even guess when they might rise, for which she requires being informed. This is what we do professionally. Furthermore,” added Dr. Tymon, who had the foresight three weeks ago to predict a recovery in electricity stocks.
Dr. Tymon attends the trading floor at the Miranda Stock Exchange every day at 11 in the morning. She said that the news of the separation of the economist and writer Angel Mancera Galetti from the Caracas Stock Exchange was very regrettable, as during his tenure Mancera Galetti gave proof of competence and a great understanding regarding the securities market. Almuerzo Ofrece hoy Don Federico Schlessinger a 500 Niños
CARACAS, diciembre de 1966. — A propósito del 17 de diciembre, fecha en la cual se conmemora otro aniversario de la muerte del Libertador, expone el celebrado artista Luis Alvarez de Lugo en la “Sala Reverón” un Bolívar de civil que ha llamado la atención. Alvarez de Lugo, quien es autor de otro cuadro enviado al certamen promovido recientemente por la Sociedad Bolivariana señaló que el aspecto cívico dentro de la personalidad del Padre de la Patria es fascinante y de paso evocó sus cualidades de legislador, tribuno y escritor. El es parte de una interesante exposición retrospectiva presentada con motivo de la proximidad de la fecha cuatricentenaria de Caracas, con imágenes de la ciudad del 900.
El señor Federico Schlessinger ofrece hoy un banquete a cinco centenares de niños de escasos recursos. Es el homenaje que anualmente por esta fecha rinde el Sr. Schlesinger al país como reconocimiento por la hospitalidad que encontró a su llegada de la Europa en llamas del año 1939. En esta ocasión el Sr. Schlessinger ha querido asimismo obsequiar un almuerzo la próxima semana a un grupo numeroso de ancianos: “También los viejos —principalmente aquéllos que viven aislados del cariño de allegados— son merecedores de un recuerdo en esta fecha que debiera ser de alegría y de convivencia para todos”.
Recordó asimismo Schlessinger sus comienzos en este país. Tuvo entre otras ocupaciones la de repartidor de la panadería vienesa en una camioneta cuya fotografía conserva en su oficina como testimonio de los días difíciles. Gobernaba a Venezuela el General Isaías Medina Angarita, a quien en más de una ocasión lo vio entrar a “La Península” en la esquina de San Pablo, cuando bajaba de Miraflores con su Ministro de Guerra y Marina Delfín Becerra.
—En cierta ocasión me vio llegar con las bragas y tras de saludarme como era habitual, me invitó a un “sandwich” de jamón y un vermouth, que acepté, y me parecieron exquisitos, no sólo por la oportunidad, sino por el gesto de sencillez del Primer Magistrado, para quien entonces no era sino un simple trabajador”.
La única mujer que es miembro de una Bolsa de Comercio en Venezuela, la doctora Dorothy Tymon, dice que esta actividad del intercambio de valores aunque aparentemente ruda, no es del todo extraña para la mentalidad femenina: una buena administradora de hogar —por ejemplo— debe estar enterada de los precios del mercado y hasta adivinar cuándo éstos pueden subir, para lo cual requiere estar informada. Es lo que hacemos profesionalmente. Además —añadió la doctora Tymor— quien tuvo el acierto hace tres semanas de pronosticar una recuperación de los valores de electricidad.
La doctora Tymon asiste todos los días a las 11 de la mañana a la rueda en la Bolsa de Comercio de Miranda. Dijo que la noticia de la separación del economista y escritor Angel Mancera Galetti de la Bolsa de Caracas era muy lamentable, ya que durante su actuación Mancera Galetti dio pruebas de competencia y de una gran comprensión en lo concerniente al mercado de valores. Dijo por último que en EE.UU. son ya numerosas las mujeres que trabajan activamente como corredores de bolsa.
