Horse Racing on Canvas
+ A Fortunate Corollary to the Flower Fair
CARACAS, May 1964. — The “Feria de las Flores” (Flower Fair) left a very pleasant resonance in Caracas. Among other merits, this exhibition had the property of stimulating the initiative of many people now willing to perform similar trials in their private homes. Floriculture or gardening seems to be, in effect, an activity of great spirit and future among us. Just a few weeks ago, a school for gardeners was officially declared open south of La Rinconada. Roberto Orta Pacheco expresses that, without a doubt, this activity in Venezuela has a future and offers promising perspectives for the youth.
“Gardening,” points out Orta Pacheco, “is art and science at the same time. This is perhaps the reason why all gardens do not follow an equal pattern, nor do all gardeners lavish similar care and maintenance systems upon their creations. However, there are principles in this matter that must always be kept in mind. For example, Orta Pacheco suggests that in any case, it will be preferable to plant one plant and have it well cared for, rather than several poorly attended ones.”
He mentioned in passing that Nature, being grateful, pays back with flowers and fruits, with its foliage and shade, every effort made through constancy and man’s love for the land.
“Due to the interest felt today for the subject, and also due to the need to prepare specialized labor, it is why I consider,” finished Orta Pacheco, “that it is of urgent necessity to open new gardening schools. They represent a precious source of work for the youth. It should not be forgotten that green areas are an increasingly appreciated part of modern cities.”
Horse Racing in a Pictorial Exhibition
Tomorrow, the exhibition of Luis Alvarez de Lugo opens. It is a beautiful collection of attractive natural motifs from the brush of this artist, who was also a publisher of the famous magazine “El Cojo Ilustrado.” The pictorial display will be exhibited on Sunday at the Galería Reverón, located in the Centro Comercial de La Florida. In this regard, Serradimigni predicts that it will undoubtedly constitute an event of the highest artistic significance.
Not long ago, we were able to appreciate in our halls the excellence of the admired Félix Martínez, with one of the most applauded collections of “high school” styles, and that of Pedro Centeno, painter of bulls in a new display of anatomical figures. Those attending the Sala Reverón tomorrow, Sunday, will appreciate among other motifs by Alvarez de Lugo some reproductions of La Rinconada, scenes of Thoroughbred racing, and the detail always full of joy represented in the colors. Quite a few fans of the equestrian sport will be able to admire the interpretative facility of this author for themes that are, by the way, not very common—that of bringing faithfully to the canvas the image full of emotion and color that visitors usually appreciate from the stands of the racetrack of La Rinconada. Perhaps in this genre, the collection of Alvarez de Lugo will achieve a popular impact. Nothing is as passionate in our environment as horse racing. + Afortunado Corolario en la Feria de las Flores
CARACAS, mayo de 1964.—Muy grata resonancia dejó en Caracas la Feria de las Flores. Esta exposición tuvo entre otros méritos la propiedad de estimular la iniciativa de no pocas personas ahora dispuestas a realizar parecidos ensayos en sus casas particulares. La floricultura o jardinería parece ser en efecto una actividad de gran aliento y porvenir entre nosotros. Hace apenas unas semanas se declaró oficialmente inaugurada una escuela de jardinistas al sur de La Rinconada. Roberto Orta Pacheco expresa que sin lugar a dudas esta actividad es en Venezuela de porvenir y ofrece halagadoras perspectivas a la Juventud: “La Jardinería —señala Orta Pacheco— es arte y ciencia a la vez. Quizá sea esta la razón por la cual todos los jardines no siguen un patrón igual, ni todos los jardinistas prodigan a sus creaciones sistemas de cuido y mantenimiento similares. Sin embargo existen en esta materia principios fundamentales que deben tenerse siempre presente. Por ejemplo Orta Pacheco sugiere que en todo caso será preferible sembrar una planta y tenerla bien cuidada y no varias mal atendidas”.
Recordó de paso que la Naturaleza agradecida retribuye con flores y frutos, con su follaje y con la sombra todo esfuerzo realizado por la constancia y el amor del hombre a la tierra.
—”Debido al interés que hoy se siente por el tema y además debido a la necesidad de preparar mano de obra especializada es por lo que considero —terminó diciendo Orta Pacheco— que es de urgente necesidad abrir nuevas escuelas de jardinería. Representan una preciosa fuente de trabajo para la juventud. No debería olvidarse que las áreas verdes son parte cada vez más apreciables de las ciudades modernas.
LAS CARRERAS DE CABALLOS EN UNA EXPOSICION PICTORICA
Mañana se inaugura la exposición de Luis Alvarez de Lugo. Es una hermosa colección de atrayentes motivos naturales muy propios del pincel de este artista, reeditor al mismo tiempo de la famosa revista “El Cojo Ilustrado”. La muestra pictórica se exhibirá el domingo en la Galería Reverón, situada en el Centro Comercial de La Florida. Al respecto Serradimigni pronostica que constituirá sin duda un evento de la más alta significación artística. No hace poco se pudo apreciar en nuestras salas la superación del admirado Félix Martínez, con una de las más aplaudidas colecciones de estilos de gran escuela, y la de Pedro Centeno, pintor de los toros en un nuevo alarde de figuras anatómicas. Los asistentes de mañana domingo a la Sala Reverón apreciarán entre otros motivos de Alvarez de Lugo algunas reproducciones de La Rinconada, estampas del pura-sangre de carreras y el detalle siempre lleno de alegría representado en los colorines. No pocos aficionados al deporte hípico podrán admirar la facilidad interpretativa de este autor para con los temas no muy comunes por cierto, de llevar con fidelidad al lienzo la imagen plena de emoción y colorido que suelen apreciar desde las tribunas los visitantes consuetudinarios del circo de La Rinconada. Quizá en este género la colección de Alvarez de Lugo logrará un impacto popular. Nada apasiona tanto en nuestro medio como las carreras de caballos.
