CARACAS, julio de 1965. — Opino que cuando se asiste a una muestra de pintura, el artista enamorado de su arte debe de presentar sus mejores creaciones. Un pintor consciente no debe de exhibir “cualquier cosa”, para cumplir y salir del paso. Debería por el contrario reflexionar y observar que a una exposición van los que saben y los neófitos que alaban. Un trabajo mediocre, aunque sea de seres que han conquistado fama, causan opiniones atroces en la personalidad y es además un paso en falso, comienzo del fin de la gloria. A buenos entendedores media palabra basta.
Marcos Castillo envió en junio a la Colectiva Reverón un apunte al lápiz. El pintor se halla gravemente enfermo. El habría elegido un tema acorde a su nombre adquirido en justas lides. Es una de las más calificadas formas de la pintura.
Luis Alvarez de Lugo, es un pintor enamorado de su arte. Hemos visto sus muestras. Su colorido es hermoso y como retratista consumado es de estilo neoclásico. Eligió intencionalmente pinceladas largas y barridas que son muy audaces y evocan la técnica de Franz Hals. Alvarez de Lugo es un pintor psicologista. Logra con una pincelada atrevida y certera, arrancar a los personajes que posan las manifestaciones anímicas y las transmite al lienzo revelando el carácter audaz, la sonrisa maliciosa, la bondad o la inocencia de ellos. Como paisajista y pintor de tipos populares es formidable. Con un poco de impulso y de sinceridad en las críticas que bien se las merece, Alvarez de Lugo, se impondrá en la sociedad elegante caraqueña. Las damas estarán contentas de verse tan parecidas en las obras. El artista tiene la singularidad de dar en los retratos cierta majestad y elegancia inconcebibles.
