Headline: Two Academies pay tribute to doctor Arnoldo Gabaldón

The National Academy of Medicine and the Academy of Physical, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences held a very special joint session to pay tribute to Arnoldo Gabaldón, one of the 20th-century Venezuelans who has contributed the most to his country without adopting the role of a “redeemer” or believing himself to be “chosen.” Nevertheless, he is one of our contemporary heroes, as he fought a single battle—and that war was against malaria. The exemplary work of this epidemiologist from Trujillo at the head of the Ministry of Health and Social Assistance has, unfortunately, not been matched since. Like all scientists, he knew how to plan and put projects into practice.
He made Venezuela the first country to organize a national-scale campaign against malaria through the use of DDT, which allowed Venezuelans to be among the first to achieve the eradication of that disease in the largest area of the tropical zone.
Specifically, the initiative for this academic act was due to the 60th anniversary of the first spraying with DDT carried out in the country.
In this special session, the board was occupied by doctors Benjamín Scharifker, Claudio Bifano, Otto Lima Gómez, José Enrique López, and Leopoldo Briceño Iragorry. Additionally, family members of Dr. Gabaldón were present.
During the event, academics Blas Bruni Celli, José Miguel Avilán Rovira, and José María Carrillo spoke, highlighting the extraordinary work of Gabaldón, which extends to a vast body of research that remains relevant today.
The Great Hall of the Palace of the Academies fulfilled one of its objectives: to not let the work of citizens who should be inspirations for new generations fall into oblivion.
Once the act concluded, attendees moved to the sessions room where a portrait of the honored figure, painted by Luis Álvarez de Lugo, was unveiled.

Titular: Dos Academias rinden homenaje al médico Arnoldo Gabaldón

La Academia Nacional de Medicina y la de Ciencias Físicas, Matemáticas y Naturales celebraron una sesión muy especial para rendir homenaje a Arnoldo Gabaldón, uno de los venezolanos del siglo XX que ha dado más a su país sin haberse revestido del rol de redentor ni creerse un elegido, sin embargo, es uno de los héroes contemporáneos, ya que libró una sola batalla y esa fue contra la malaria. El trabajo ejemplar de este epidemiólogo trujillano al frente del Ministerio de Sanidad y Asistencia Social desafortunadamente no ha podido ser igualado. Como todo un científico supo planificar y llevar a la práctica los proyectos.
Convirtió a Venezuela en el primer país que organizó una campaña a escala nacional contra la malaria mediante la utilización de DDT, lo cual le permitió a los venezolanos ser también los primeros en alcanzar la erradicación de esa enfermedad en el área de mayor extensión de la zona tropical.
Y precisamente, la iniciativa de este acto pleno de academismo se debe a que se cumplieron los 60 años del primer rociamiento con DDT efectuado en el país.
En esta sesión tan especial ocuparon el presídium los doctores Benjamín Scharifker, Claudio Bifano, Otto Lima Gómez, José Enrique López y Leopoldo Briceño Iragorry. Además de los científicos estuvieron presentes familiares del doctor Gabaldón.
En el acto intervinieron los académicos Blas Bruni Celli, José Miguel Avilán Rovira y José María Carrillo, quienes destacaron la labor extraordinaria de Gabaldón que se extiende a un vasto trabajo de investigación que continúa vigente.
El Paraninfo del Palacio de las Academias cumplió con uno de sus objetivos, no dejar en el olvido la obra de ciudadanos que deberían ser inspiración de nuevas generaciones.
Una vez clausurado el acto, los asistentes pasaron al salón de sesiones donde se develó un retrato del homenajeado obra de Luis Álvarez de Lugo.
