This section documents the historical collaboration between Luis Álvarez de Lugo and the legendary harpist and composer Juan Vicente Torrealba. Commissioned by Radio Rumbos, Álvarez de Lugo created the cover art for this iconic LP, merging the visual mastery of Venezuelan landscape painting with the golden age of llanera music.

In 1978, Luis Álvarez de Lugo’s career reached a significant cultural milestone when he was selected by the prestigious radio station Radio Rumbos to illustrate the cover of maestro Juan Vicente Torrealba’s LP. This collaboration was part of the station’s exclusive ‘Gallery of Artists,’ an honor shared with figures of the caliber of Tito Salas and Tomás Golding.

Image 2: Biography of the Artist He was born in Caracas on April 23, 1923. He studied drawing and painting at the School of Fine Arts of said city under the direction of Martín Durbán. In 1942, he became known through his bullfighting watercolors and oils, which earned him a favorable comment in the column “Cuernos y Alamares” of the newspaper “La Esfera” on March 8 of the same year. He continued for years in full pictorial activity, dealing with the national landscape, the human figure, and portraiture. In 1964, he inaugurated the Armando Reverón Hall together with other painters; that same year he held a solo exhibition in the same Hall, repeating in 1966. Among his important works, 7 original portraits of The Liberator Simón Bolívar and many other portraits of personalities linked to science, letters, and commerce can be noted. These works are found in various public and private entities. His pictorial work in general appears in numerous private collections in Venezuela and abroad. Since 1965, he has dedicated part of his time to teaching drawing and painting in an art workshop founded by him and bearing his name. The international art critic Raymond Charmet, referring to his Paris exhibition in 1973, writes the following: “Coming from Venezuela where he is a famous artist, his painting has the merit of faithfully translating the charm, at once simple and subtle, of that wonderful country. Fascinating and grandiose nature, an existence made of sweetness and harmony, young girls of enchanting grace. Alvarez de Lugo evokes all those themes in a painting of a perfectly balanced impressionist realism where taste and science unite with mastery.”

Tomás Golding, Tito Salas y Eduardo González, figuran entre los elegidos hasta ahora, para enriquecer esta serie de discos de “Radio Rumbos” y estamos seguros que la inclusión de un artista de relieve como Alvarez de Lugo, será recibida por todos en forma grata. Mucho nos complace la acogida que han tenido esta serie de discos entre los amigos del “Gigante Rumbos” y nuestra mayor satisfacción será el que los conserven en un lugar favorito de su discoteca, como un recuerdo de… “La Emisora de Venezuela”. Imagen 2: Nace en Caracas el 23 de abril de 1923. Estudió dibujo y pintura en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de dicha ciudad bajo la dirección de Martín Durbán. El año de 1942 se da a conocer a través de sus acuarelas y óleos taurinos, que le merecen un comentario favorable en la columna “Cuernos y Alamares” del diario “La Esfera” del 8 de marzo del mismo año. Continúa por años en plena actividad pictórica tratando el paisaje nacional, la figura humana y el retrato. En 1964 inaugura junto con otros pintores la Sala Armando Reverón, el mismo año realiza una exposición individual en la misma Sala, repite el año 1966. Dichas obras se encuentran en diversas entidades públicas y privadas. Su obra pictórica en general figura en numerosas colecciones particulares en Venezuela y el extranjero. Desde 1965 dedica parte de su tiempo a la enseñanza del dibujo y la pintura, en un taller de arte fundado por él y que lleva su mismo nombre. El crítico de arte internacional Raymond Charmet, refiriéndose a su exposición de París en 1973, escribe lo siguiente: “Venido de Venezuela donde él es un artista famoso, su pintura tiene el mérito de traducir fielmente el encanto a la vez simple y sutil de ese maravilloso país. Naturaleza fascinante y grandiosa, existencia hecha de dulzura y armonía, muchachas jóvenes de una gracia encantadora. Alvarez de Lugo evoca todos esos temas en una pintura de un realismo impresionista perfectamente equilibrado donde el gusto y la ciencia se unen con maestría”.
