The first thing we observe in this new exhibition by painter Luis Alvarez de Lugo (Marcos Castillo Gallery, 33 works) is his Venezuelan emotion towards the landscape. Possibly, the good reviews written abroad regarding his exhibition in Paris a few years ago coincide in this aspect: expressions of tenderness, creative will, honesty, since his figurative expression, far from reneging with the years, has been affirming his plastic instrument; his light has become purer, the color harmonized in such a way with the landscape that the chromatism constitutes today the maximum expression of beauty in his current painting.
Let us see for our part, Luis Alvarez de Lugo presents in this exhibition at the Marcos Castillo [Gallery], deeply felt landscapes. Landscapes of Caracas, of the idyllic Caracas that still remains for us around the Country Club with its flowering apamates, with its old bucares and that late afternoon sun that gilds the hills, drawing out unsuspected tonalities.
The artist’s brush has captured everything with felt emotion: backlighting and paths, and with great affection we would dare to think of those rural paths, mountain inland, the old pulperia on the road with its porch of sun-drenched earth imprisoned with the old tree that towers its crown to continue the path towards The Hacienda. All these scenes have the virtue of evocation. All of us who have lived our first years in towns or the countryside remember them with nostalgia and tenderness because if any qualification can be applied to Luis Alvarez de Lugo, it is that of a painter of nostalgia. White donkeys and patient [animals] ruminating their solitude in the patio of the hacienda or the drove on the road, the luminous afternoons of the coleo are unforgettable scenes.
But apart from the anecdotal nature of this painting, Alvarez de Lugo also reveals himself as a fine landscape artist, a painter of marinas who knows how to capture in each of his themes the light of the morning or the afternoon, the precise color, without allowing the mixing of them in his creations. For him, painting is essentially realistic, although his realism is not strictly photographic; the painter knows how to embellish it with his creative sensitivity.
Some of the figures so celebrated in other exhibitions of the painter are present. Here we see Verónica, Cristina, and some others with the most rigorous drawing because the painter believes—and he is right—that to paint well, it is necessary to know how to draw safely, based on the Picassian theory that to “un-draw” (de-structure) it is necessary to know how to draw well, which is precisely contrary to what is practiced today, or rather, it is “un-drawn” without having learned the craft.
We participate in one of the critical observations of “Carrefour” of Paris, regarding his exhibition in the “Bershein Gallery,” that is to say, in these paintings “one feels the life of the beings and things through a especially fascinating reality.”

Lo primero que observamos en esta nueva exposición del pintor Luis Alvarez de Lugo (Galería Marcos Castillo, 33 obras), es su emoción venezolana frente al paisaje. Posiblemente las buenas críticas redactadas en el exterior con motivo de su exposición en París, hace algunos años, coincidan en este aspecto: expresiones de ternura, voluntad de creación, honestidad, ya que su expresión figurativa, lejos de renegar con los años ha ido afirmando su instrumento plástico; la luz se ha hecho más pura, el color armonizado en tal forma con el paisaje que su cromatismo constituye hoy por hoy la máxima expresión de belleza en su pintura actual.
Veamos por parte, Luis Alvarez de Lugo presenta en esta exposición de la Marcos Castillo, paisajes hondamente sentidos. Paisajes de Caracas, de la Caracas idílica que todavía nos queda por los lados del Country Club con sus apamates floridos, con sus viejos bucares y ese sol de atardecer que dora las colinas arrancándole tonalidades insospechadas.
El pincel del artista ha plasmado todo con sentida emoción: contraluces y caminos y con mayor cariño nos atreveríamos a pensar en esos caminitos rurales, montaña adentro, la vieja pulpería del camino con su corredor de lantero de tierra aprisionada con el viejo arriero que empina la copa para continuar después el camino hacia La Hacienda. Todas estas escenas tienen la virtud de la evocación. Todos los que hemos vivido nuestros primeros años de vida de pueblo o de campo las recordamos con nostalgia y ternura porque si algún calificativo puede aplicársele a Luis Alvarez de Lugo es el de pintor de la nostalgia. Burriquitos blancos y pacientes rumiando su soledad en el patio de la hacienda o la recua por el camino, las tardes luminosas del coleo son escenas inolvidables.
Pero aparte de lo anecdótico de esta pintura, Alvarez de Lugo se nos revela también como un fino paisajista, un pintor de marinas que sabe captar en cada uno de sus temas la luz de la mañana o de la tarde, el color preciso, sin permitirse la mixtificación de los mismos en sus creaciones. Para él la pintura es esencialmente realista aunque su realismo no sea propiamente fotográfico, el pintor lo sabe embellecer con su sensibilidad creadora.
Algunas de las figuras tan celebradas en otras exposiciones del pintor están presentes. Aquí veremos a Verónica, a Cristina y alguna otra con el más riguroso dibujo porque el pintor cree —y está en lo cierto— que para pintar bien, es necesario saber dibujar seguramente basándose en la teoría picassiana, que para desdibujar es necesario saber dibujar bien, que está precisamente en contra de lo que hoy se practica o sea se desdibuja sin haber aprendido el oficio.
Participamos de una de las observaciones críticas de “Carrefour”, de París, a propósito de su exposición en la “Galería Bershein” o sea que en estas pinturas “se siente palpitar la vida de los seres y de las cosas a través de una realidad especialmente fascinante”.
O sea que ésta como sus exposiciones anteriores y la de París existe en Alvarez de Lugo un constante espíritu de superación y su pintura por lo tanto se hace más pura, más diáfana y transparente en su atmósfera.
